A nanotechnological clean up method –
In situ use of iron oxide nanoparticles for
elimination of harmful substances from
abandoned polluted areas


NanoSan intends to develop a new method for biological in situ clean up of groundwater pollution caused by benzene and tar oil. Since iron (III), which can stimulate biological degradation, is abundant but not bioavailable, the potential of natural self-cleaning through microorganisms often cannot be used in contaminated water-bearing strata. An innovative in situ clean up method is expected to evolve from improvements in bioavailability that will be achieved through direct local application of special ecotoxicologically tested iron oxide nanoparticles. Basically, this new method is much more efficient, cheaper and environmentally friendly than the conservative methods used up to now.
